Railway Post Office UP 5901 on display at Niles Depot

Saturday, October 3, 2009 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
UP 5901

For over 100 years the U.S Post Office used Railway Post Office cars to sort mail on trains all across the country. Join us for Letters From a Train, as we celebrate a time-honored tradition of the past. Come see how mail was handled in this unique rail car. Meet the men of the Railway Mail Service who worked this car until RPO service ended in 1967.

Mail will be hand canceled on board, as the RPO becomes an official U.S. Post Office for the day. A historic reproduction cancel and cachet have been designed and will be available at the event, or bring your own mail to receive this unique cancel.

Come see the 1940’s Art Deco bar-lounge, a railroad President’s car and stroll through the Historic Niles District.
