Swanton Pacific Ranch and Railroad

Al Smith, a Cal Poly Alumni, trusted his Swanton Pacific Ranch and his 1/3 scale railroad to Cal Poly University, SLO. Al Smith Day at the Swanton Pacific Ranch and Railroad was established following his passing in 1993 and is on the Sunday in April closest to his birthday. The day not only honors Al, but is the inaugural day for the SPR&R season. The one-third scale live steam locomotives were built to haul visitors to the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exhibition, held in San Francisco to celebrate both the opening of the Panama Canal and the reconstruction of the city after the 1906 earthquake.
